POSTPONEMENT OF THE NEXT PHASED UK CUSTOMS CONTROLS

Postponement of the next phased UK customs controls

On 28th April, the UK government released a statement confirming its intention to postpone the introduction of Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) checks and Safety and Security controls on imports to Great Britain from the EU.

These controls, part of the UK’s phased introduction of import controls, were due to come into force on 1st July 2022.

The implementation of these import controls goods from the EU will be deferred to the end of 2023.

As a result of the announcement the following measures will no longer be required from 1st July 2022

  • Physical, documentary and identity checks on SPS imports from the EU at the GB border
  • ENS (safety and security) declarations
  • Prohibitions and restrictions on the import of chilled meats
  • Export Health Certificates for animal-origin products, or phytosanitary certificates for plants and plants products

The Government intends to update the UK’s Border Operating Model this autumn to reflect the new timelines.

Within this announcement the Government referred to their 2025 border strategy which includes the UK Single Trade Window; a digital concept designed to streamline the various Export, Import and Customs requirements under one platform, with the aim of removing complexity and delivering on the promise of a frictionless border with the EU.

More information on the Single Trade Window will be provided once released, similarly we will share an update following receipt of the revised Border Operating Model.
