Rhenus and CHEP pool expertise in sustainable partnership

With businesses increasingly focused on lowering their operational CO2 emissions in a bid to help save the environment, logistics expert Rhenus Warehousing Solutions UK is committed to reducing its environmental impact in partnership with CHEP.

Supply chain and equipment pooling specialist CHEP, the world’s most sustainable supply chain solutions company, is helping Rhenus achieve a significant reduction in waste and emissions from its supply chain without sacrificing service or supply.

Based in The Logistics Golden Triangle and specialising in third-party UK warehousing solutions, Rhenus uses CHEP’s pallet pooling service to transport palletised goods leaving its hub to customers across the UK and abroad, which is made easier as its main customers also use CHEP’s system.

John Taylor, Transport Manager at Rhenus Warehousing Solutions UK, explains: “The transportation industry has a big impact on the environment, and we want to lead the way by reducing our carbon output. We’re committed to operating a sustainable logistics model. As the market leader in pallet supply, CHEP helps us do that by reducing waste and vehicle emissions in our supply chain. Now more than ever, it makes sense to have a pooled resource and to rent and reuse rather than buy.”

With a wide range of supply chain platforms, CHEP works with small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) all the way up to household name businesses and international brands.

Matt Quinn, CHEP Vice-President, Northern Europe, adds: “Our longstanding working relationship with Rhenus is a real testament to the service CHEP offers, and a great example of how our circular economy approach can deliver the availability and sustainability that our customers rely on. Our model – where equipment continually circulates throughout the supply chain and is repaired and reused – delivers significant cost savings, transparent annual costs to budget and secure supply accordingly, and substantial environmental benefits compared to other alternatives.”

In 2022, by partnering with CHEP, Rhenus were able to save wood resources by 118,722 cubic decimetres, diminish emissions by 15,926 kilograms, and reduce its waste by 20,740 kilograms, and have been presented with CHEP’s sustainability certificate in honour of the success. There are currently some 36 million CHEP blue pallets in circulation in the UK and Ireland.
