"Two-way traffic is the perfect solution, both from an economic and ecological point of view. We’ve now managed to make full use of the car-carrying trains operated by ARS Altmann. They arrive in Cuxhaven with new German vehicles for export and now make their return journey loaded with imported British cars,” says Oliver Fuhljahn, who is responsible for automobile logistics at Cuxport, in which the Rhenus Group has a majority holding. “Using enclosed wagons also ensures that the transport operations have a high degree of security.”
The new vehicles arrive in Cuxhaven on board the RoRo ferries belonging to the DFDS Seaways shipping company, which operates almost daily services to and from Immingham in northern England. Cuxport uses its own railway sidings, which were modernised and expanded two years ago, to load the vehicles on to the railway wagons. The car-carrying trains then make their way to their destinations – Riedstadt in Hessen and Wolnzach in Bavaria. ARS Altmann has intermediate storage facilities at these sites and the vehicles are then distributed from there.
“Numerous test loads at Cuxport convinced us about the terminal’s efficiency and the technical feasibility of the loading processes. We’re delighted that we’ve been able to optimise the supply chains the German market for the Jaguar and Land Rover brands to an even greater degree by working with the port operator,” says Michael Bronsert, Head of Sales at ARS Altmann.
Cuxport GmbH operates a multi-functional handling terminal at the deep water port of Cuxhaven. In addition to extensive RoRo handling operations, Cuxport provides an ideal geographical location for all maritime traffic and the best possible links to inland destinations. The company is a joint venture where Rhenus AG & Co. KG has a 74.9 percent holding and HHLA Container Terminals GmbH holds 25.1 percent of the shares. The Rhenus Group provides logistics services around the globe and has annual turnover amounting to EUR 4 billion. Rhenus employs more than 24,000 people at more than 350 locations worldwide. Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA) is one of the leading port logistics groups at the North Sea ports.
