India’s Rivers Are Rising Again: Rhenus Leads the Inland Transport Revival

India is rediscovering the power of its rivers. With a vast 14,500 km network of rivers, canals, and backwaters being revitalized, Inland Water Transport (IWT) is no longer a neglected mode—it’s emerging as a game-changer for logistics. By shifting cargo from congested roads and rails to river corridors, India is steering toward a greener, more efficient future.

Rhenus Logistics is at the forefront of this transformation. In 2025, it launches Rhenus Inland Waterways Transport India Pvt Ltd, introducing advanced European inland shipping practices to India. Backed by its global operations—1,100 barges across 70 ports and 42 million tonnes moved annually—Rhenus brings precision, sustainability, and scale to Indian waterways.

The company’s flat-bottom pusher barges are tailored for India’s river dynamics, offering a reliable solution for bulk cargo like coal, steel, cement, food grains, and project freight. This aligns perfectly with India’s flagship Jal Marg Vikas Project, which upgrades 1,380 km of the Ganga (NW-1) and develops key hubs at Haldia, Patna, Sahibganj, and Varanasi.

Why rivers?

They flow when roads jam and rails choke. Inland shipping uses 75% less fuel per ton-km than road transport and drastically reduces emissions. With 145.5 million tonnes moved via waterways in FY 2024-25—a record high—India’s river network is proving its potential.

From the Brahmaputra (NW-2) in the Northeast to the Indo-Bangladesh Protocol Route, rivers are reconnecting regions and revitalizing trade.

Rhenus is proud to power this river renaissance, fusing global expertise with local needs, and helping India build a robust trimodal logistics system—Road + Rail + River.

The future of Indian logistics flows through its rivers. And the current is only getting stronger.
