Podcast Episode 15: Open source software and the Open Logistics Foundation

One sector, but similar obstacles: companies are opting to rely on cooperation in future instead of on developing many small, individual solutions, which each firm has to work out for itself in isolation, in order to overcome the obstacles encountered in everyday logistics operations. The Open Logistics Foundation, which was launched in 2021, offers a platform for this and it is the main topic in the new podcast episode of Logistics People Talk.

Markus Sandbrink, the Rhenus Group’s Chief Information Officer, and Andreas Nettsträter, the CEO of the Open Logistics Foundation, together discuss the benefits of this way of resolving problems as well as the critical issues, such as maintaining neutrality, which the partners need to bear in mind. ‘Operating in line with the motto “Joint activities, which should take place in an absolutely neutral way, also need an absolutely neutral home”, the Open Logistics Foundation seeks to offer a neutral forum so that it creates benefits for all those involved,’ Andreas Nettsträter explains.

The main goal is to join forces and identify problems within the fragmented logistics sector and digitalise the interfaces between the many parties involved. ‘It’s much easier to do this if you cooperate, create standards together and, what’s even better, launch common solutions too,’ says Markus Sandbrink, describing the benefits that arise when various companies look for answers to problems all of them face. The partners hope that processes will become less complicated and therefore more efficient as a result of the adoption of specific digital methods, which will make it possible to set a standard for the entire sector in the future.

The new podcast episode deals with how the partners are seeking to solve these problems, which specific projects are being launched within the Open Logistics Foundation and which benefits can be obtained in this regard by using open source tools.
