    The biggest challenges in battery logistics are safe handling and transport, especially for lithium-ion batteries, which can be highly flammable or even explosive under certain circumstances. In addition, there are regulatory requirements that affect packaging, labelling and transport conditions.

    The transport of batteries is subject to regulations for the transport of dangerous goods, such as the ADR guidelines (European Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road). These regulations stipulate how a battery needs to be packaged, labelled and documented. Battery logistics activities are subject to strict requirements to protect both the employees and environment.

    Battery storage, especially for lithium-ion batteries, requires special safety measures. Batteries should be stored in places that are well ventilated, dry and cool in order to minimise the risk of overheating and fire. In addition, they should be stored separately from other hazardous materials, while large warehouses are required to have fire extinguishing systems and emergency plans.

    Manufacturers, distributors and specialised recycling companies are responsible for collecting and recycling automotive batteries. Many countries have introduced “extended producer responsibility”, which obliges producers to take back and recycle car batteries.
