After a 35-day national lockdown was completed on 30 April 2020, the government of South Africa announced that economic activities can be gradually resumed.
A system of five levels (whereas 5 is the most severe lockdown) has been defined, which give the government the flexibility to adjust the economic activities related to the spread of COVID-19.
From 18 August 2020, South Africa moved collectively to Level 2 lockdown, which entails that all industries can operate under strict health and safety regulations. Domestic business and leisure travel is permitted.
All Rhenus offices in China and Hong Kong are back to normal working status, with the appropriate safety measures in place as advised by the government, particularly for the Wuhan branch. We will notify you if there are any changes to the above.
Myanmar is now facing the second wave of Covid-19 infections - there is a substantial spike in new cases. Different states, townships and areas have different regulations applied such as full lockdown, semi-lockdown, no-lockdown and quarantine requirements are in place for domestic travels, etc. As the consequences, Rhenus Myanmar operations are affected.
All government offices including customs are operating on two shift basis (one team is working from home and another team is at the office) hence, delays in formalities are expected. Government is also enforcing a strict truck curfew from 12 midnight to 4AM local time which affects and delays truck operations. Ports are operating normally, however passenger flights remain suspended and only a few freighter services are available. Private companies are re-introducing working from home program to their employees.
Rhenus Myanmar will operate on below arrangement:
No restrictions. Feeling an increased demand to the short sea solutions related to the current situation with FTL from EU. Foresee short sea rates increase inbound. Outbound rates already increased due to the shortage of equipment and space.
You can find more detailed information for the latest updates and new measures (27.05.2020) here!

At this moment, free space & empty equipment from/to Far & Middle East is still limited.
Vessels are full booked until end of April and peak season surcharges are implemented by all carriers.
For transport to USA & Latin America, space problems are expected the following weeks.
Furthermore, several countries have imposed a lockdown, which is affecting loading and delivery of cargo heavily. Extra costs of demurrage/detention and/or storage will most probably occur.
Several shipping lines and terminals have already announced that they will not grant extra free time. We want to point out that, based on BL conditions, shippers remain responsible for the cargo and occurred costs, independently from agreed Incoterms with consignee.

To prevent the spread of the Coronavirus, the air transport remains affected as airlines cancelled a part of their flights. The no-fly zone also has consequences for cargo. The no-fly zone may lead to a decrease in cargo transport capacity between the Netherlands and the countries concerned.
For more information on restricting air traffic from other countries, please check frequently the website of ACN, the sector organisation for the air cargo industry in the Netherlands.
Please do not hesitate to contact your local sales representative to discuss individual concerns.
