Frequently asked questions

In sea freight logistics, LCL stands for “less-than-container load”. It refers to ocean freight shipments that do not fill an entire container. LCL shipping companies combine shipments from multiple customers to share a single container. This creates cost advantages for companies transporting smaller cargo volumes – without the need to book an entire container.

With FCL (full container load), a shipper has enough cargo to occupy a container exclusively and books the entire unit for one shipment. LCL shipping companies, on the other hand, distribute container space among several consignments from different shippers. Although both methods involve shipping containers by sea, the key difference lies in capacity usage and exclusivity.

Delivery times in LCL freight can be shorter because it involves direct, optimized routing with as few stops as possible. However, transit times can still be influenced by port congestion, container availability, truck driver shortages, or unexpected disruptions and detours. Despite these variables, LCL shipments are considered highly reliable due to preferential carrier handling.

Most general cargo can be shipped using less-than-container-load shipping, provided it fits into a standard container. Once shipment volumes exceed a certain threshold, FCL may become the more economical option. Some goods are excluded from LCL terms, including perishable goods, live animals and plants, valuables such as jewelry or precious metals, personal items, foreign exchange and securities, tobacco products, vehicles, weapons, ammunition and specific categories of dangerous goods.
