Handling hazardous substances requires precise processes and a high level of responsibility. As a seasoned logistics partner, Rhenus manages all activities related to the storage, handling and transport of dangerous goods, ensuring a secure and reliable supply chain.
The transportation of dangerous goods represents a major challenge within global logistics and freight operations. Due to their chemical, physical or biological characteristics, these materials present considerable risks to people, the environment and property, making the application of particularly strict safety measures essential. Alongside transporting dangerous goods, we also regularly ensure their correct storage and secure handling at ports, dangerous goods warehouses and hubs. From highly flammable substances to toxic chemicals, acids and alkalis – national and international regulations such as ADR, IMDG and IATA govern the safe handling, packaging, storage and transshipment of these goods. Through precise planning and careful execution of all processes, we contribute to accident prevention and support overall public safety.
Ensuring the safe transportation of dangerous goods by road involves a complex process, which calls for special vehicles, skilled staff and strict observance of legal regulations. Based on the specific type of hazardous goods (e.g. batteries, alkalis, chemicals and hazardous waste), various truck types are deployed, including tanker vehicles, silo and bulk goods vehicles, container vehicles or closed-bodied vehicles. Alongside full ADR transportation, we also manage shipments in line with the limited quantities (LQ) and excepted quantities (EQ) provisions defined by ADR. The high standard of these services is confirmed through SQAS (Safety & Quality Assessment for Sustainability). Our dedicated Hazardous Goods Officers oversee employee training and confirm adherence to both national and international requirements. To maintain maximum safety, our drivers hold the required certification for ADR transportation.
The integration of warehousing and transportation brings a range of technical benefits. Effective risk management enhances safety, reliability, speed to market and cost efficiency. Specific packaging and labeling, combined with the direct transfer of goods from storage into the transportation network, for example via consolidated cargo terminals, support faster and more seamless processes. The deployment of LNG vehicles on numerous short-haul routes also lowers CO2 emissions. A comprehensive hazardous goods logistics approach creates transparent supply chains and allows for a more flexible response to unexpected events.
Rhenus continues to expand its investments in state-of-the-art and innovative dangerous goods warehouses. All facilities comply with high safety standards and are fitted with, among other elements, fire alarm, gas detection and ventilation systems, foam sprinkler installations and CO2 extinguishing systems, including real-time incident reporting. Real-time stock level reporting is also provided and supports accuracy and reduces errors.

We develop customized ADR logistics solutions that are flexible and tailored to your requirements.
Hazardous goods refer to materials and items that may present a risk due to their physical or chemical characteristics and therefore require special safety precautions during transport.
Typical examples of dangerous goods include explosives, gases, flammable materials and toxic substances such as chemicals, pesticides, petrol and nitrogen. In certain cases, pharmaceutical substances can also fall under the category of dangerous goods.
ADR is the abbreviation for “Accord européen relatif au transport international des marchandises dangereuses par route”, meaning “European Agreement Concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road”. It is an international regulatory framework that governs the safe road transportation of dangerous goods across Europe.
