LCL, or less-than-container load, is a term used for sea freight shipments that do not fill a complete container. Freight from multiple customers is consolidated into one shipment, providing cost advantages. As a result, shippers in Brazil with lower cargo volumes can make use of container shipments without having to fill a full container.
Unlike LCL, FCL refers to a full-container load where a shipper has sufficient freight to occupy an entire container and use it exclusively. The shipper secures the whole container for its own cargo, ensuring sole access to it regardless of the amount of space utilized.
With LCL, the emphasis is on direct transport and the most efficient route possible, with a minimal number of stops. Estimated transit times can be affected by several factors, including port congestion (e.g., Santos or Paranaguá), container shortages, truck driver shortages or detours caused by unforeseen events. Even so, less-than-container-load (LCL) shipping remains highly reliable due to the preferential treatment provided by transport companies.
General cargo does not have a size restriction, provided that it can be loaded into a standard container. If the freight volume exceeds a certain threshold, a full-container load (FCL) may be a more economical solution. Furthermore, certain types of cargo are not eligible for shipment as a less-than-container load (LCL), such as perishable goods, live animals and plants, valuables (including jewelry and raw materials such as gold or platinum), as well as personal items, foreign exchange and securities, tobacco and cigarettes, vehicles, weapons, ammunition and specific classes of dangerous goods.
