"The transhipment of these kinds of heavy refinery parts tends to be the exception rather than the rule at north German ports,” says Matthias Schrell, Managing Director of Rhenus Midgard Wilhelmshaven, underlining the special nature of this project. “Not every terminal is suitable for this kind of process. We have excellent possibilities in this field. We only had to make a few minor adjustments in order to be able to handle the enormously heavy reactors in a safe and efficient manner.”
The MS “Svenja”, which has been handled at the North Port terminal at Wilhelmshaven’s inner harbour, has a load-bearing capacity of 12,975 DWT. The refinery parts were loaded using the vessel’s two 1,000 tonne on-board cranes; the MS “Svenja” is 160 metres long and almost 28 metres wide. The MS “Svenja“ left Wilhelmshaven this Tuesday with its heavy-duty cargo loaded on board by Rhenus Midgard and will cross the Atlantic bound for North America.
