Job Description
What you can expect
- Prepare and process import/export documents and other forms on behalf of clients according to customs regulations, laws, and procedures.
- Arrange for payment of duties, taxes, storage, and transportation of imported goods and bonds to cover duty goods.
- Quote duty and tax rates on commodities for clients and update client profiles with proper HS codes, tariff treatments, change of address, and vendor information.
- Ensure entries are processed in a timely manner to avoid storage and delays to customers.
- Closing of entries within required time to avoid penalties.
- Answer customer queries about the status of shipments.
- Communicate with agents on customs issues to resolve problems with shipments.
- Support duty drawback processes and Canadian Duty Deferral program compliance.
- When necessary, go to Canada Customs Office and obtain a release of shipment.
- Surrender Bill of Lading: send original bills of lading to steamship lines to obtain a release of freight.
- Rating and clearing of HVS and LVS shipments.
- Sub Agency entries (Billing, faxing, deliveries, payables, pick-up of advice notes, customs clearances).
- Maintain and update client profile with proper H.S codes, Tariff Treatments, change of address, vendor information.
- Communicate with agents on customs issues to resolve problems with shipments.
- Due to the requirement of the role to periodically travel to and from the airport, the role requires the incumbent to have their own transportation vehicle.
- Participates in the rotational After-Hours Program in Customs.
- Additional hours may be required during peak periods to meet business needs.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
What you bring
- 1 – 2 years of experience in a Customs support role
- Certified Customs Specialist (CCS) a strong asset
- Strong knowledge of global supply chain and logistics process
- Exceptional written and oral communication skills with a focus on relationship building
- Mathematical and Financial Skills: Ability to work with numbers, spreadsheets, financial documents, and data entry software
- Strong attention to detail required for documentation and daily duties
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to thrive in a high pace environment
- Refined problem-solving and negotiating skills
- Proficiency in MS Office, with intermediate Excel skills preferred
- Ability to provide after hours, weekends, and statutory holiday support as needed
