CO2-negative operation at Wesel business site: Rhenus Warehousing Solutions makes sustainability its top priority

The new business site operated by Rhenus Warehousing Solutions in the Wesel region in Germany will set new standards for energy and environmental protection from this year onwards. Rhenus will be using the logistics property, which has space measuring 86,000 square metres in all, to strengthen its presence in the Lower Rhine region. The new BREEAM-certified building will be available for the globally active company that specialises in warehouse logistics as a multi-user centre.

The new business site operated by Rhenus Warehousing Solutions in the Wesel region in Germany will set new standards for energy and environmental protection from this year onwards.

The new flagship project operated by Rhenus Warehousing Solutions is situated at the Rhine-Lippe Wesel port, directly in the Lippeaue nature reserve. The multi-user facility will be impressive both from a logistical and sustainable point of view and fit perfectly into its “green” location. Once the centre has been completed and handed over, it will be possible to operate it without producing any additional CO2: the plans envisage using one of the largest interconnected solar power installations in Europe with peak power output of 9 megawatts. Extensive battery storage systems will allow the business site to operate without any connection to the national grid, even at night. A geothermal energy system, which will operate using the electricity generated by the solar power installation, will provide the correct temperature for the buildings by means of geothermal heat. Parts of the façade will be overlaid with wood and other parts covered by green plants in order to absorb carbon dioxide.

The CO2 footprint at the business site will in future be measured using special software and it will also suggest measures to continually optimise operations – such as using alternative materials for customers’ projects. Electric charging points for cars and bikes, XXL “insect hotels” and nesting boxes for local birds will complete the sustainable features that will be introduced at the site. The logistics property in the Wesel area is yet another example that Rhenus only builds new business sites meeting or surpassing the “BREEAM Excellent” standard. “With the Wesel business site, we are setting a new standard in terms of sustainability,” says Andreas Plikat, the General Manager of Rhenus Warehousing Solutions. The logistics specialist is cooperating with a regional nature conservation association, which will check the sustainability measures and those related to adapting to climate change.

The new building will also fit ideally into the warehousing specialist’s existing network of business sites. The Rhine-Lippe port, for example, is just under 35 kilometres away from the city of Duisburg and the Rhenus companies based there. Rhenus will offer its customers tailor-made outsourcing and value-added logistics services to cover all their individual requirements at the new business site. Four sections of the building will also be equipped for WGK3 usage (materials that pose a serious threat to water supplies), so that it will even be possible to store hazardous substances there. If all goes to plan, the multi-user property is due to be completed during the summer of this year.
