Press Release

Rhenus and Ewald Dörken AG start working relationship in Dortmund

As of this month, Rhenus has been handling all logistics services for three companies in the Dörken Group. A long-term contract includes the provision of storage, picking and shipping preparation services. Rhenus will also take over production-related value-added services, in particular the tinting and mixing of paints and the labeling of containers in the logistics center. The logistics provider has invested in a new in-house hazmat storage facility to deal with this new business.

“Over the last few months, we have made intensive preparations to meet our client’s requirements, which we will now implement in long term collaboration with Dörken-Baufarben, Dörken MKS-Systeme and Protec® Systempasten. This applies to both structural changes in our logistics center and the training of our employees for the new tasks,” says Heiko Nowak, Managing Director of Rhenus Contract Logistics West. “In addition, we are linking into the company’s IT systems to ensure a continuous data exchange.”

Once the start-up phase is complete, Rhenus will formulate value-added solutions for its new clients in the Dörken Group based on individual orders as well as providing classic warehouse management services. The company will use a range of mixing machines that will allow it to make customized paints and lacquers shortly before dispatch. Rhenus will label these products according to the client’s stipulations in a separate logistical process.

Investments in a warehouse area for non-water-extinguishable products, where carbon dioxide can be used in the event of fire, and in new sprinkler systems ensure the highest degree of safety for both the staff working there and for the environment. Rhenus has worked closely with the authorities of the city of Dortmund to obtain the necessary approval for hazardous material storage quickly and without problem.

“As a medium-sized company from Herdecke, we have found in Rhenus a logistics partner in nearby Dortmund that has impressed us with its solutions and is able to integrate production-related processes above and beyond classic logistics into its operations,” says Karl E. Dörken, board member of the Dörken Group. “The options for further expansion in the modern logistics center also fit in with our plans for growth.”

“Our multi-user concept means we can offer our customers flexibility and therefore also cost advantages,” stresses Heiko Nowak. “We also attach great importance to our capacity to adapt to the short-term production and logistics needs of different clients at the site and to complement the solutions with our expertise. Our ability to comply with all the legal requirements for the storage of hazardous materials in our work for Ewald Dörken AG is yet another demonstration of the speed with which we are able to expand our service portfolio.”
