Rhenus joins the hydrogen association Hy.Region.Rhein.Ruhr

On 19 March, 16 stakeholders from industry, science and the municipal group Duisburg signed the foundation charter for the hydrogen association Hy.Region.Rhein.Ruhr. The aim of the association is to establish and promote a regional green hydrogen economy and the transformation of the coal-based energy system. As an international logistics service provider with a number of locations in Duisburg and the Rhine-Ruhr region, the Rhenus Group is also a member of the association.

The founding of the association was initiated by the City of Duisburg and Joachim Jungsbluth from the Centre for Fuel Cell Technology at the University of Duisburg-Essen in order to bring together all the important players for the use of hydrogen in mobility and industry. Among them, many are already engaged in concrete hydrogen applications as well as research, development and the establishment of demonstration projects for hydrogen production, storage, transport and use.

"Water will soon replace coal as an energy source." With these words Andree Haack, Head of the Economic Department of the City of Duisburg, welcomed the founding members to the digital founding meeting. "And because there are numerous suppliers and consumers of energy along the Rhine and Ruhr, Duisburg as a location has the potential to become a pioneer in the use of the key technology hydrogen. Companies in Duisburg can directly test the marketability of new H² value chains around industry and logistics," Haack is convinced. Nevertheless, there is much to be researched on the way to green and profitable hydrogen use.

In the field of ship transport, the Rhenus Group is already involved in the development of the first hydrogen-powered inland vessel. The use of hydrogen as an alternative drive for road transport also plays an important role for Rhenus. Find here more information on sustainable transport.

In addition to Rhenus, the 16 founding members of the Hy.Region.RheinRuhr association include Duisburger Versorgungs- und Verkehrsgesellschaft, duisport - Duisburger Hafen, the Development Centre for Ship Technology and Transport Systems, Hüttenwerke Krupp Mannesmann, Mitsubishi Power Europe, the Lower Rhine Chamber of Industry and Commerce, Siemens Gas and Power, the City of Duisburg, Thyssengas, ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe, the University of Duisburg-Essen, the Unternehmerverband Group, Wirtschaftsbetriebe Duisburg, the Centre for Fuel Cell Technology and the Centre for Logistics and Transport.
