Rhenus Group Acquires Deep Sea Terminal in Rotterdam – Europe's No. 1 Port

Rhenus Port Logistics is continuing to boost its commitment to Rotterdam: The logistics services provider took over a deep sea terminal measuring 200,000 square meters at Europe’s largest seaport with effect from 1 June 2011. The facility has direct access to the North Sea. Rhenus Logistics B.V. purchased 100 percent of the shares in DFDS Seaways Maasvlakte B.V., a deep sea terminal operator in Rotterdam and part of the DFDS A/S Group.

“The deep sea terminal will benefit the entire Rhenus group,” says Peter van der Steen, Managing Director of Rhenus Logistics B.V., “and will help us to continue our growth process as a complete logistics services provider in the Netherlands.” During the integration period, the entity will operate under the name Rhenus Logistics Deep Sea Terminal B.V.

The purchased area measures 20 hectares in all, the quay is 500 meters long and the RoRo section has two ramps and access to the water along 300 meters. “The draft of 16.5 m provides clear benefits over many other terminals located between Le Havre and Hamburg,” says Peter van der Steen.

The terminal provides direct sea access and will act as a central hub for many transportation market segments, like break bulk, bulk, container, RoRo and project loads. It is well connected to the hinterland through the A15 highway, there is direct rail access to the terminal with a link to the main rail network and barges can easily be serviced at the quayside. The two mobile cranes on the site are capable of lifting 100 tons each and 150 tons when operating in tandem.

The acquisition will be supplementing the group’s existing capacity at Waalhaven in one of the growth centers for global trade – the port of Rotterdam. “Backed by this modern equipment, extended storage capacity, a 16.5 meters draft, additional quay facilities and competent staff, we are now in an even better position to partner with our existing and future base of customers to introduce a more complete and efficient supply chain for them,” says Peter van der Steen.
