Materials containing tar from road building work and waste materials in the earth from a petrol station: this kind of construction waste requires special treatment and is subject to strict conditions before it can be disposed of or reused. Rhenus and Geiger have now opened a new facility in Kehl for this purpose. With investments totalling more than EUR 5 million and the latest technical equipment, it meets the highest standards at the moment and this makes it almost unique in Germany.
Most of the waste comes from the local region and arrives at the port of Kehl, where it is processed within the facility – for example, sieved, broken down and homogenised – and is then transported onwards by truck, train or inland waterway vessel. The centre is fully sealed to ensure that no materials are released into the environment – and this includes special paving, a tyre washing unit and even the roof of the building. Air is constantly sucked out when transporting the waste along an encapsulated conveyor belt. The materials are also gently dropped into the inland waterway vessel via a cascade so that no kind of dust can occur there either.
Rhenus Port Logistics Rhein-Neckar is responsible for all the handling and waterway-related services for Geiger. They include the entire logistics operations at the site. The Managing Director, Uwe Veith, describes how relevant the project is. “We’re opening one of the most modern waste handling and treatment facilities involving trimodal services in Germany. We’re therefore using the latest technology available and are acting as a pioneer: this will be the new standard in future,” Veith explains. Geiger is the sole operator of the plant and is responsible for treating the waste and preparing the extensive documentation that is required because of the complicated approval situation – and producing retained samples. “The site in Kehl with its link to the river Rhine is very important for the strategic orientation of the Geiger Group. This enables us to keep the waste transport operations off the roads and therefore make significant savings in CO2 emissions,” says Martin Haberstock, the Technical Business Unit Manager for Disposal at Geiger.
The plant is now being put into service after a planning and approval procedure that lasted seven years. Rhenus and Geiger are planning to handle 150,000 – 200,000 tonnes of waste at the facility every year in future.
