Rhenus Warehousing Solutions continues its growth course in Germany

Rhenus Warehousing Solutions, the specialist for warehouse logistics with global business operations, is continuing to expand its network of business sites within Germany by renting about 23,000 square metres of warehouse space at the newly emerging VGP Park Giessen. The company will be offering individual solutions and value-added services for every need from this central location in Germany from 2023 onwards; this will be yet another multi-user facility to add to the more than 20 that it currently operates in the country.

This is already the second warehouse that the logistics specialist will move into within the university city and it includes premises for offices and technology. Rhenus Warehousing Solutions will share the site, which overall provides two large buildings and measures approx. 150,000 square metres at the “Am Alten Flughafen“ industrial and business park, with two other tenants. “The additional site is firstly designed to support our growth goals and be available for new business,” says Dr Kerstin Stegner, a Member of the Executive Committee at Rhenus Warehousing Solutions. “Secondly, it will provide an alternative solution for existing customers that are using the logistics facility in the Europa district; it measures 80,500 square metres and is almost working to full capacity.”

The newly emerging property has been designed as a multi-user facility and is therefore suitable for almost any requirements. The three compartments are all equipped with WGK3 (water hazard classification) floors and overall provide approx. 3,500 square metres of additional mezzanine space. The planned heating and/or cooling technology will enable ambient storage too. “We’re planning the new facility in such a way that it will meet the requirements of customers ranging from industrial to pharmaceutical corporations and, ultimately, will even make it possible to store dangerous goods,” says André Brückmann, the Branch Manager in Giessen.

Rhenus and the logistics property developer, VGP, can be proud of their achievements when it comes to “green logistics” too. The building site is located at the former depot of the US Army and Air Force Exchange Service logistics base and is therefore a so-called “brownfield” project, which is making use of the space at the inactive military facility, instead of having to develop any more green belt land. The project has also been certified in line with the DGNB Gold building standard and it will not only have solar panels, but also energy charging points for forklifts and even sustainable water management; this means that rainwater will be collected and then reused in the building.

There are also plans to use electric vehicles as a shuttle service for employees travelling between the two business sites in Giessen in order to manage the workforce during peak periods, as the two sites are very close to each other. The building is due to be handed over in January 2023.
