The new berths, construction of which will begin in February 2025, will extend the quay length of Rhenus Cuxport by 600 meters. The infrastructure is specially designed for handling wind turbines and offers a load capacity of up to 15 tons per square metre. This will create additional space for the increasing demand for storage and handling capacities for onshore and offshore wind turbines.
“The existing multipurpose strategy has proven to be resilient to crises and market fluctuations. It will remain a central component of Cuxport's DNA in the future. The new areas will enable us to concentrate on onshore and offshore business in particular,” explains Michael de Reese, Head of Rhenus Port Logistics.
The expansion is a direct response to the ambitious expansion targets for wind energy: capacity at sea is set to increase to 30 gigawatts by 2030 and even to 70 gigawatts by 2045. By expanding the port infrastructure, Rhenus Cuxport is making a significant contribution to achieving these targets and ensuring that the energy industry remains competitive.
Two thirds of the project, which is being implemented with a total volume of around 300 million euros, is being funded by the “Gemeinschaftsaufgabe zur Verbesserung der regionalen Wirtschaftsstruktur” (GRW), the “Joint Task for the Improvement of Regional Economic Structures”. The remaining 100 million euros will be pre-financed by the port operators.
