An innovative logistics centre is being built for Rhenus Warehousing Solutions in Bönen

The specialist for warehouse logistics with global business operations, Rhenus Warehousing Solutions, celebrated the ground-breaking ceremony for a new logistics centre in Bönen in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia; the site is situated right next to the Kamener Kreuz motorway junction. The logistics specialist will take over the building as a multi-user facility during the summer of 2023. Forward-looking, automated solutions will support the employees in their work in the building, which will provide 59,000 square metres of space. A large proportion of the building’s space has already been allocated to the long-standing manufacturer of connecting elements, Spax. The project has a very clear focus: to provide a high degree of automation.

A building that is 12 metres high and has six fire sections is being built for Rhenus at a site that measures 106,000 square metres overall. The new logistics property is located in Bönen in North Rhine-Westphalia, to be more precise, on Edisonstrasse. The plans envisage a high degree of technology at the multi-user facility, which is why the name “Edison” – Thomas Edison is viewed as a pioneer in the field of electrical technology – fully describes the centre. Coordinated automation, which meets the challenges posed by the shortage of specialist personnel in the logistics sector, forms the core element in the warehouse processes. By combining different, automated guided vehicles (AGVs), such as very narrow-aisle trucks (VNAs), pallet stacker and autonomous mobile robots (AMR), complete automation is used to transport the goods to a wide variety of work areas, store them and make them available for subsequent processes in line with needs.

Rhenus is constructing a showcase project here in terms of automated warehouse processes and is demonstrating how machines and digital tools can simplify and accelerate customers’ specific requirements at many points. “We regard this site as a beacon project. Rhenus is pressing ahead as a pioneer in technological terms and is guaranteeing its future viability by introducing innovations. We’re looking forward to being able to present the final results to our customers and partners in the near future,” says Andreas Mayer, a member of the management team at Rhenus Warehousing Solutions Deutschland, reporting on developments. The topping-out ceremony is due to be celebrated this summer.

The new logistics property will enable the service provider, Rhenus, to support customers from very different sectors in their everyday logistics operations. Most of the building’s space has already been allocated to Spax International and its world-famous SPAX brand. The developer of connecting elements, which places great emphasis on growth, is putting its faith in modernisation and welcomes the concept behind the new warehouse site, which is also located very close to Spax’s headquarters in Ennepetal. The new property is situated on an industrial and business park with excellent traffic connections and it offers ideal conditions for the processes that are used at a highly automated logistics warehouse. The brownfield project also satisfies the demand for sustainable logistics. An air-heating pump is being installed, for example, and extensive solar panel units are also being used. The goal is to make the site self-sufficient in its energy supplies.
