Rhenus introduces pharmaceutical logistics at the opening of its logistics centre in the south of Frankfurt

The Rhenus Group opened its new Frankfurt-South logistics centre with an information event about the supply chain in the health care and pharmaceutical sectors on 16 June. The multi-user site with warehouse space measuring 40,000 square metres is located on the Rodgau Logistics Park. 23,000 square metres of shed space have been specially designed to meet the requirements of the pharmaceutical industry. The site, which went into operation in the spring, received both a manufacturing license for secondary packaging and a pharmaceutical wholesale license in May.

“We’re showing companies in the health care and pharmaceutical sectors the potential of our new logistics centre through our opening event. Confidence in our reliability is a very important issue, especially in this area of third-party logistics, which requires great care,” says Hans Tamaschke, who is responsible for Rhenus’ Pharma business unit. “Our visitors were able to gain an impression of our work in our temperature-controlled warehouses with their 2-to-8°C and 15-to-25°C sections and by viewing the production area.”

In May, the regional council in Frankfurt/Main issued secondary packaging and pharmaceutical wholesale licenses for the site, which has storage space that can be expanded to 42,000 square metres for the pharmaceutical industry, if required. These permits allow the logistics specialist to offer, for example, value-added services such as repackaging medicines.

“We’ve created our own Rhenus quality assurance system based on international industry standards of Good Working Practice (GxP) and ISO 13485 for our company-wide network of sites in the pharmaceuticals business unit,” says Christiane Schütz, Managing Director of Rhenus Pharma Service. “Of course, we’ve also implemented these standards at the Frankfurt-South logistics centre. Our central location at the heart of Europe and our proximity to one of the most important airports in the world mean that we can serve as a hub for importing and exporting active substances and medicines and high-quality medical equipment for our customers with international operations.“
