Sustainable transport services from Rhenus Freight Logistics: Evonik Industries relies on LNG trucks

The logistics specialist, Rhenus Freight Logistics, and its customer, Evonik Industries, have been making use of sustainable transport operations since the end of 2021: the vehicles, which are being deployed for transport services between the Evonik production site in Essen and the Rhenus logistics warehouse in Düsseldorf, among other things, are now powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG).

Rhenus has been transporting about ten complete loads per week for the global chemicals production company, Evonik, since the summer of 2020; this involves a round trip of 75 kilometres on each occasion on the Essen – Düsseldorf – Essen route. The “Stralis Natural Power” trucks manufactured by IVECO and powered by LNG, which Rhenus has now purchased, will particularly take over the night trips that have been handled by conventional diesel vehicles in the past. The LNG vehicles will also be used for daily shuttle services between the Rhenus logistics sites in Düsseldorf and Hilden.

“As a logistics specialist, we’re constantly following the developments related to sustainable drive technologies,” says Jörg Fuchs, the Freight Forwarding Manager at Rhenus Freight Logistics. “We’re therefore delighted that we’ll be able to continue pressing ahead with this process ourselves by using LNG trucks in future.” Rhenus Freight Logistics is currently utilising two of the sustainable vehicles in Düsseldorf and two at its business site in Kirchheim. They are being supplied by the long-standing Rhenus partner company, Betz International, which has already been cooperating with the globally active logistics specialist for more than 15 years.

LNG has several advantages over conventional types of drive systems. They include CO2 emissions that are about 15 percent lower than a normal diesel vehicle and almost zero emissions for nitrogen oxides (up to 70 percent lower) and soot particles (up to 99 percent lower) – and the vehicles have an operating range of as much as 1,300 kilometres. “Difficulties such as increased noise levels because our business site in Essen is located in the city centre are also a thing of the past if we use LNG trucks,” says Evonik Branch Manager, Patrick Muhlack, with a smile on his face.

As far as the future is concerned, Rhenus is planning to continue investing in the expansion of its LNG fleet in order to use this technology on internal European routes too: two more vehicles have already been ordered for this purpose.
