CARBON NEUTRAL LCL EXPORT CONSOLIDATION

WHAT IS CARBON NEUTRAL LCL EXPORT CONSOLIDATION?

As part of a commitment to neutralize the carbon emissions of all less-than-container-load (LCL) products by 2030, starting from 2022, cargo shipped with the Rhenus Consolidation Box out of Hilden Gateway to all destinations will be carbon neutral, with no additional costs to customers. Rhenus is working with ClimatePartner, an independent consultancy, to verify the calculation methodology and offset the amount through verified and audited carbon offset projects.

LCL OFFSET PROCESS

HOW DOES IT WORK?

  • The emission info from LCL consolidation shipment exported from the Central European Gateway is collected
  • The result will be verified by an external third-party company and then be offset afterwards
  • Carbon neutral certificate (under Rhenus) will be provided as a proof of carbon neutrality

E-Solutions

With new technology, Rhenus can provide environmentally conscious customers with tailor-made logistics solutions.

e-Cargo is an IATA initiative for the air cargo supply chains. It involves carriers, freight forwarders, ground handlers, shippers, customs brokers and customs authorities. It replaces paper documents with electronic messages, reducing costs, improving transit times, accuracy and the competitiveness of air freight.

e-Link is a system that enables Rhenus to deliver export shipments paperless to the handlers. e-Link supports and improves the export acceptance process between the forwarder and the carrier’s handling agent. Your shipment’s complete process can be monitored before, during and after acceptance and Rhenus can act accordingly.

Rhenus in the Netherlands is part of the Schiphol SmartGate Cargo (SSGC) project. This programme is a joint initiative by the Tax Administration/Customs, Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, Air Cargo Netherlands and KLM Cargo. The goal is to achieve safer, faster, more efficient and cost-effective cargo handling as well as a close collaboration concerning monitoring, speed, safety and reliability within the air cargo chain. e-Cargo effectively contributes to achieve these goals using e-Link and the e-Airwaybill (document that accompanies goods shipped by an international air courier to provide detailed information about the shipment and allow it to be tracked).

Rhenus uses electronic messaging as a replacement for paper documents such as orders, shipment information and invoices. The aim is to automate the exchange of information between applications without human intervention in order to increase the efficiency of the business processes involved.

At Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, Rhenus is a partner of The Milkrun. This system not only gives us prior insight into which freight is arriving (when, where and with which airline), but also reduces truck movements on the handler's premises, consequently decreasing CO2 emissions. The fully self-sustainable portal results in more reliable data, time savings and lower costs.

TESTIMONIAL

"As a major international airline, achieving carbon-neutral growth from 2020 is an important target that we take seriously. Being the first and only airline to operate an Airbus A350-1000 in the Netherlands and many other destinations worldwide, with 25 percent less fuel burn reducing the carbon footprint, is one of our pillar initiatives to achieve this goal. We are committed and have embarked on many initiatives to reducing our carbon footprint and mitigating our impacts on climate change, and continuously support those initiatives that have the same objective in mind. This is why we are very happy that the RHEGREEN initiative is now also being offered on our A350-1000 flights between Amsterdam and Hong Kong."

Terms & CONDITIONS

The purpose of the RHEGREEN tool is to estimate the amount of CO2 emissions of cargo loads during a specific flight defined by the departure airport and the arrival airport.

  • RHEGREEN is a carbon footprinting tool that allows clients to estimate CO2 emissions on air freight routings and carriers before the shipment is booked.
  • The RHEGREEN tool estimates fuel use per flight per kg freight, which is converted into CO2 emissions (factor 3.16). The estimation is based on the technical specifications of the aircrafts and operational data (flight distance, routing, aircraft type etc.) of third parties.
  • The RHEGREEN tool is based on capacity-based allocation, which assigns proportional emissions to passengers and belly cargo.
  • The scope is limited to air operations and will not include possible road legs (which may have flight numbers).
  • Shipments offloaded, by the airline, of the green flight, will be rebooked on the next available flight unless principal advises otherwise (by written instruction).
  • Rhenus Group and/or RHEGREEN cannot be held liable for last minute aircraft changes decided upon by the airline. These changes might be of influence on the CO2 emissions of the cargo.
  • RHEGREEN aims to comply, where possible and realistic, with the industry methods such as the GLEC Framework and IATA RP1678.
  • The RHEGREEN tool is validated by an independent third party.
  • RHEGREEN is a trade name of Rhenus Group.
